Introduction to Tutors

U3A in Hervey Bay is fortunate enough to have some excellent tutors who volunteer their time, education, life experiences and passion for topics to share with our members. We are pleased to include this new section on our website.

Alice Waters - Bio

I am a keen language learner and teacher. I love words, how they function, and what they teach us about the world and each other.

I taught German in primary and secondary schools before moving into teaching English to overseas students. I, too, have had to learn irregular verbs, understand the pluperfect and cope with the frustration of not having the words you want on the tip of your tongue.

I have lived abroad and I enjoy travel, especially the challenges of communicating in a new language – “speaking with hands and feet” as they say in Germany.

Colin Coates

An Englishman by birth, I left school at 16 and joined the Merchant Navy. Four eventful years later I had to leave through poor eyesight.
I then worked in factories for 43 years (production control, work study, accounts etc) until retiring in 2018 and moving to here in Australia.

I enjoyed my work, but it was not my passion. History was my favourite subject at school, and it is, and always will be, my passion.

My other interests include British Beer, Sunderland Football Club, and sport in general. Since 2011 I have been researching Saltaire, a World Heritage site in West Yorkshire. You can view my work at www.saltairevillage.info

Meredith Murray - Eastern Philosophy

Meredith Murray, PhD is a teacher, learner & researcher with a smidge of philosophical understanding gained from personal study and online courses from Edinburgh University and Penn State. My classes offer a structured approach to the history of philosophy using visually appealing graphic slides to illustrate the concepts, combined with some teaching and guided member discussion.

There are no right or wrong answers. Participation is always voluntary. New class members will soon feel at home.
